Land Area

Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean, located in  southeast of India. It has a total area of 65,610 km², with 64,740 km² of land and 870 km² of water. Its coastline is 1,340 km long. 

Climate

Sri Lanka's climate can be described as tropical. The average yearly temperature ranges from 28 to 30 °C (82.4 to 86.0 °F).

The rainfall pattern is influenced by two monsoon winds. The first is from mid-May to October, when winds originate in the southwest, bringing moisture from the Indian Ocean. The second season occurs in October and November,

Population

Sri Lanka is a diverse country, home to  many ethnicities, religions and languages. Accoding to  2012 census the population is  20,263,723.

Religion

Sri Lanka is a multi-religious society. Though  the Theravada Buddhism is the major religion, other religions such as Hinduism, Christianity and Islam are also followed. 

Language

There are two official languages; Singhala & Tamil and English is widely spoken by many in the middle class and upper middle class. Also English is recognised as the link language. 

Food

Sri Lanka’s main cuisine consists of boiled rice served with arrays of hot curries

made with fish, meat (mainly chicken) and vegetables, lentils and even fruit curries  accompanied by side-dishes  such as chutneys, pickles or coconut “sambols” (shredded coconut mixed with red chilli flakes,  dried Maldive fish and lime juice.   

Besides rice various kinds of flat bread are also served with hot curries mainly for breakfast and dinner.

Sri Lanka also has an amazing variety of tropical fruits; juicy mangoes, pineapple and bananas in different size and taste.

Capital

Administrative capital: Sri Jayawardanapura also known as Kotte, 17 km²

located just beyond Colombo city centre. The population is about 185,000.

Commercial and financial capital: The port-city of Colombo is the largest city in Sri Lanka. The population is around 500,000 and the area is 37 km2           

Currency

The Rupees is the currency of Sri Lanka., divided into 100 cents. Denominations (notes) are 5000, 2000,1000, 500, 100, 50 and 20. Foreign currencies  can be easily changed at the airport, banks & hotels.

Visa

Sri Lankan law requires foreign visitors obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) to enter Sri Lanka.
