Breaking News - Race Report Stage 5 - Albania

We are getting closer! The second last stage of of 44,5km of GlobalLimits Albania -The Hidden Treasure - started this morning at the ancient monastery of Mesopotan. After passing rolling hills, grassland and local villages, the runners arrived at checkpoint 3, where they were faced with "The Wall", a climb of 1.100m on 4km. At Check point 4, we have a wonderful panoramic view of the Ionian Sea and the finish line - Butrinti National Park.

Tonight our runners stay by the lake in the village of Murci. They will also join the village festival with complementary Albanian dinner and traditional Albanian polyphonic dance performance.

The top 6 runners started with an incredible high pace today and arrived at checkpoint 3 within 5mins. However, the climb selected the field. Alfred and Gezim Gaxhja again jointly finished first in 5:02 and defended their overall lead. 3rd was Gazmed Shehu from Albania just 25seconds behind the Gaxhja brothers. Ralph Crowley from the US was 5th today but kept his overall 3rd position.

Once again Christina Khinast from Austria finished first in 5:54hrs followed by Kirsten Domdey from Germany in 6:40hrs and Belinda van der Riet from South Africa in 6:57hrs. Overall Christina Khinast is still in clear lead ahead of Belinda van der Riet. Unfortunately Belinda Beenders suffered with stomach problems today and lost her 3rd overall rank to Kirsten Domdey by 14mins.

Despite his painful hip that he caught at his fall in the 3rd stage, Bryan Gensits from the US ran with the leading group until checkpoint 3. It is amazing and hardly to imagine to see Bryan finishing the race limping since stage 3 and still being in the leading group.

Tomorrow is the last stage where runners will run 14km to the UNESCO world heritage site of Butrint.
